The Monastery of the Holy Spirit The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is a Roman Catholic monastery belonging to the world-wide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.) – more commonly known as Trappists. (For more about our order, see OCSO webpage ). As described in the Order’s constitution, this Order is a monastic institute wholly ordered to contemplation. The monks dedicate themselves to the worship of God in a hidden life within the monastery under the Rule of St Benedict. They follow in the spirit of the founders of Citeaux, as handed on in the tradition of the Order, within a community wholly orientated to a contemplative life of prayer. They lead a monastic way of life in solitude and silence, in assiduous prayer and joyful penitence… See Our Order's Constitutions for a more detailed description of our monastic life as Cistercians. We are currently a community of 45 monks spanning several generations, who live, work and pray at the Abbey. We were founded from the Abbey of Gethsemani, Trappist, KY in the spring of 1944. You can learn more about the early and building years of our community in A History of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, which tells the story of our monastic presence in Georgia . The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is located in Conyers , Georgia , 35 miles east of Atlanta , Georgia .
